Sprinkle some salt and ground black pepper. You can replace these cheeses with few other cheese combinations. Chopped chives, crushed garlic, and fresh oregano will be a good addition to its flavor. It is served with steamed vegetables, as a steak topping, pasta, baked potatoes, and gnocchi.

    Tips:

    • The point is the taste of your cheese sauce is highly dependent upon the cheese you are using. Flavor can be changed by using different kinds of hard cheese. To enjoy the cheddar-forward flavor, use strong cheddar cheese.
    • You have to pay attention to the temperature while adding cheese in the sauce. Whisk the cheese over the low heat. Adjust the temperature to the point where cheese melts completely.
    • Store-bought cheese that is already shredded is coated with a small amount of anti-caking agent (usually powdered cellulose). This will help in the thickening of the sauce. If it gets too thick, add a little more milk.
    • Stir the cheese very carefully because vigorous stirring will lead to the cheese being stringy.
    • Do not skip the mustard powder because its acidic component will help in improving the sauce texture.
    • If you are shredding the cheese by yourself then it might possible that your cheese sauce will be thin. If you feel that your cheese sauce is too thin, simply add ¼ cup more cheese or 1 teaspoon of cornstarch mixed with 1teaspoon of cold water into the sauce.
    • To store the cheese, keep it in the airtight container and refrigerate it but store it only for 2-3 days. When you reheat the refrigerated sauce, just add a little milk or heavy cream.
