Easy baked mac and cheese with heavy cream

Heavy cream works as a perfect substitute of milk. In addition to that, you can also use whipping cream as an alternative of milk and the heavy cream. However, when using heavy or whipping cream, you should have it in mind that the final product is going to have excess fat and calories as compared to using milk in the recipe. Moreover, you can skip using butter when using heavy cream because they serve almost the same purpose. You can use the heavy cream and the whipping cream interchangeably for your macaroni and cheese. There are fourteen milk substitutes for mac and cheese that you can use, some of which include the following.

Cream cheese

Cream cheese acts as the perfect substitute for milk in making baked mac and cheese. Too much cheese is amazing especially when used in preparing your easy baked mac and cheese. However, you should know that using excess cheese is going to give your baked mac and cheese a different taste, but not far from using milk.  So you will not notice a huge difference when using cheese. You can choose to add or not to add butter to your mixture and get a cheesy flavor of your easy baked mac and cheese.

Sour Cream

Sour cream is also another perfect milk substitute that can be used in preparing your easy baked mac and cheese, especially if you cannot afford to get cheese and you have sour cream at home. It gives the baked mac and cheese a creamier look and has a tangy taste. However, it is not a must that you use the sour cream as a substitute. You can use it as an addition to your mac and cheese. After all, the taste is what you are looking for in the whole recipe.

Plain Yoghurt in baked mac and cheese recipe

There are some brands of mac and cheese that have plain yoghurt as part of the recipe, so you can choose to work with plain yoghurt as a substitute or a part of preparing your easy baked mac and cheese. It has a tangy taste and is creamier. In addition to that, using Greek yoghurt gives the mac and cheese and extra creamy taste. Moreover, you can also choose to use homemade yoghurt if you love your mac and cheese with yoghurt.

Powdered Milk

Powdered milk also does magic to mac and cheese the same way liquid milk does. The good thing about using powdered milk is that it has a slightly thicker consistency as compared to the regular milk. It also has extra sugar which can add taste to your mac and cheese.

Soy Milk for baked mac and cheese

Soy milk also work well as a perfect substitute for the regular milk in making mac and cheese. Ensure that you are using an unflavored version of the milk because using a vanilla flavored soy milk changes the whole taste of the baked mac and cheese. This does not mean that you cannot use it, because you can use it but have it in mind that the recipe will be a lot sweeter.

Goat Milk

The type of the milk that we have at home is usually cow milk. However, there are some instances where you may be having goat milk at home and you want to prepare your baked mac and cheese, but you fear that it might not turn out well. The good news is that you can use the goat milk to prepare the baked mac and cheese. In addition to that, goat milk also has a lower lactose content. This is a big advantage for people who experience different problem when they drink cow’s milk as they can drink the goat milk without any problems.

Water/ Butter

The only difference that occurs with using water in place of milk is it has less flavor and is also less creamy. Since water does not have a thick consistency, you might consider adding more cheese or butter to the mixture to give the desired consistency and to avoid giving you a runny cheese sauce. Add more butter or cheese than you would normally use to get the recipe on the right track.

Coconut Milk

I love using coconut milk in my easy baked mac and cheese. It gives my mac and cheese a more creamy texture and the coconut flavor taste amazing. If you are a vegan, this is the best substitute to use in place of milk in making your macaroni. Full fat coconut milk does the magic, but you can also use canned coconut milk, which is thicker and creamier. Use unsweetened coconut milk for the best results.

Rice Milk

Rice milk has a close taste to a cow’s milk. However it is less creamy, and when using it, you should consider using more cheese, butter or other thickeners.

Almond Milk

This milk is more sweater than the regular milk but is less creamy. The good thing about using almond is that it has a neutral taste, hence it will not change the taste of your mac and cheese that much. Moreover, you can add flour to this mixture as a thickener because almond is less thick. Use the same quantity of almond milk like you would do with regular milk.

Consequently, this second recipe can also use all the other ingredients apart from eggs. Some people do not fancy the taste of eggs in their recipe and they would want to prepare easy baked mac and cheese without eggs.
