Here I am sharing the best and easy home-made cheddar cheese sauce recipe. You are going to love it. This sauce is prepared by using the white sauce and shredded cheese. You can also add a twist in this recipe by trying smoked cheddar cheese, or a combination of cheddar cheese and Monterey jack cheese.

  • Butter: 3 tablespoon

  • All-purpose flour: 3 tablespoon

  • Salt: 1/2 teaspoon

  • Dry mustard: 1/4 teaspoon

  • Ground black pepper: 1/8 teaspoon

  • Milk/light cream: 1 1/2 cups

  • Cheddar cheese: 1 cup

  • Step 1: Gather and measure all the ingredients
Take all the ingredients and measure their quantities. Place them in different containers. This step will help a lot and save a lot of time.
  • Step 2: Prepare the white sauce
You have to be attentive while making white sauce as it turns white to brown immediately. It should not be cooked for long. When its raw flavor is removed, then stop cooking.

    – Warm the milk: It is suggested to warm the milk just a few minutes in the oven before adding it to the roux. This step seems unimportant, but when the milk is added to the roux, it will prevent splattering and spurting on the stovetop. Another advantage of warming the milk is that it will help in the quick thickening of the sauce.
    – Make a blond roux: Take butter and all-purpose flour in equal quantities. Melt the butter in a pan over medium heat, then add flour in it, whisk well, and cook flour and butter together for about 5-8 minutes to prepare a clumpy paste. Do not let it brown or dark. Now our golden roux is ready. Butter and flour swell when they are cooked and will help in making the thick and creamy sauce.
    – Add milk in roux: Gradually add warm milk in the roux in a very small quantity and whisk to loosen-up the roux components. The gradual addition of milk with continuous stirring will prevent lump formation. Add the leftover warm milk, whisk continuously until smooth.
    – Cook until thickened: Cook with continuous whisking, until it starts getting thick. You will get a warm, creamy, and thick mixture of butter, milk, and flour. Add salt and pepper according to your taste.
  • Step 3: Add cheese in the white sauce
After making the sauce the next step is to add cheese in it. Cook and stir, until the cheese, is melted completely. In the end, you will get a smooth and well-blended cheese sauce.
  • Step 4: Serve
Serve with pasta or veggies. You can also go for some other options.

      Some variations in the recipe:

To put in the color and flavor in the cheese sauce, add diced pimientos, and then see the magic. You can also add a pinch of garlic powder and cayenne to change the taste. Smoked cheddar instead of plain cheddar will give a lovely, creamy, smoky-flavored sauce. If you are making a cheese sauce for some Tex-Mex style dish, then you should add chili peppers and use a Mexican blend of cheeses.

Cheese sauce can be thickened in a variety of ways. The best way to make a thick, is to add more cheese. Another way is to add cornstarch slurry in a very small amount. But this second way is risky.

      How to store:

Always prefer homemade cheese sauce and store it in the dark, cool, and dry place. If you buy cheese sauce from the market, you can store it for 3 months after opening its seal. Place the sauce bottle in the fridge and add it to your dishes to enjoy its delicious taste.
