Easy slow cooked french onion soup with gruyere cheese recipe

Ingredients

  • 2 tablespoon cubed butter

  • 3 cups water

  • 1 bay leaf

  • 2 large thinly sliced onions

  • ½ teaspoon coarsely ground pepper

  • 2 cans of condensed undiluted beef broth

  • ¾ cup of regular beef broth

  • ¾ cup shredded Swiss or Gruyere cheese

  • 2 fresh thyme sprigs

  • 16 slices of French bread

  • 2 teaspoons of Worcestershire sauce

Directions

  • Spread butter in a pan and slow cook.
  • Add sweet and red onions to the butter then sprinkle with the ground pepper.
  • Cook while covered and on a low heat until the onions are slightly tender.
  • Stir in broth, water, Worcestershire sauce and cook covered for about 2 hours until all the flavors are blended well.
  • Then remove the bay leaf and the herb sprigs.
  • When ready to serve, preheat the broiler, place the bread on a baking sheet and broil until it is lightly toasted for about 2 minutes on both sides.
  • Add cheese as topping to the bread and broil until all the cheese is melted.
  • Put the soup in a bowl and top it with cheese toast then serve immediately.
